Repairing Merritt Commons, the 3,000+ square foot mural I grew up looking at…

You’ll either understand me being so tedious about getting the right color or just feel bad for the Lowe’s associate who had to help me get it just right 🫶🏻

Either way with all of that rain not much painting could happen on this 3,000+ sqr.ft. Mural I’m repairing, but what did get painted already looks so. much. better.

Plus, it was kind of nice having the “extra” time to put in to really get that paint right.

3,000 sqrft + 5 days later & we are ready for PAINT

I’m telling you prepping this wall and doing it well is going to be A HUGE determining factor in how long this repair lasts. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend a month painting something just for it to flake off again in a year. 👎🏼

I worked with a gentleman who spent his entire career restoring historic buildings - I think we created the absolute best plan to attack this wall. Let me tell you, having his expertise in my pocket was definitely a game changer.

Now that prepping is behind us, I’m itching for week 2 where painting will begin. Look forward to navigating the challenge of matching old faded paint and learning new techniques to match the original artists, Michael Browns, work.

SCS Plants 🌹🌸💐🌺🌷🌻

She needed her own moment so you could really see all of the details.

This mural really was such a dream all the way through. From initially talking to Lillian, the woman behind SCS plants, and learning her story and her “why”.

Side tangent: Her family has been tobacco farmers for generations. Talking even more, we somehow got on the subject that her grandpa has collected enough Farmall tractors for everyone to inherit one?! I love it. And all of those stories, I tied right back into the mural design really making it truly custom to HER ✨

From learning her “Why” to installing the moveable mural we painted on aluminum sheets with the help of her super cute social butterfly daughter.

They really are creating something so special over there at SCS Plants. What a blessing that my job lets me meet and work with so many unique, passionate, and hardworking people… then create something for them that brings their space and vision to life.

The transformation🙌🏼

We wanted to transform those plain cinder blocks to something colorful and playful. It’s right at the entry way to the preschool. The first thing the little children see in the morning and all throughout the day. This custom artwork was designed to set the tone for the school - where learning with your friends is fun ✨

I mean imagine being 4 years old again and walking into a school for the first time and seeing this…

HELD MY BREATH WITH EVERY PAINT PULL 🫠

Jk I matched my breathing to help keep my hand steady - exhale as I pull the line, but nobody cares about that.

We just care that yes, delusional confidence is a thing, and it gets me into some wild, amazing, nerve racking, high pressure, once in a lifetime situations.

And with that delusional confidence you just keep going, push through the awkward phase, and in the end it comes out better than you could’ve imagined.

Part of that confidence I believe comes from being blessed to work with some pretty amazing people and this opportunity was no exception. Tim and Lynn with Tim Williams Auction Company are the kind of people you say yes to purely because you WANT to work for THEM ✨

They brought me this design that was originally drawn up by Mrs. Rhonda Rogers - a local artist. She had created it years back and it never came to fruition. After recently rediscovering the design, everyone decided that I was the one to paint it.

(I mean are you seeing why I wasn’t about to say no?!?! What an honor to be seen that way by such good talented people?!)

This 54’ Chevy has lived a long life making it even more loved. After painting the design (both doors) we distressed it to make it look as though it had always been there. Keeping the classic - classic.

Yesterday I was reminded of how hard it was in the beginning. Things I don’t even think about now - were HUGE hurdles to get over then.

The story: They had a career fair at a local middle school and I was asked to participate. Making sure the girls knew Art is a Real job. How awesome?! Because I didn’t grow up knowing that! Hello, we aren’t exactly overflowing with professional artists out here in rural NC.

Talking to those girls about how I started made me remember how The Grandmas at the grocery store used to be my NIGHTMARE when I started.

The “Well hey! What are you doing these days?!” It was all smiles and hugs until my answer was “I’m painting murals.” There face said it all… Quickly ending the chat. I dreaded that response.

I believed in what I was doing SO much, but to hear that “poor you” response would kill it… make me feel like they were right… it really wasn’t a real job. What was I doing?!

I distinctly remember coming home one time and crying. Keep in mind, my business was just a baby at the time and for someone to not believe in it really affected me.

Finally, after this kept happening, I decided right then - I’m over this. The next time someone asks what I’m doing I’m going to say WITH CONFIDENCE “I’m a Muralist!” And It didn’t matter to me what there response was.

A flip had switched in me. I couldn’t wait for the next time I went to food lion so I could tell the little lady I was inevitably going to run into.

And do you know what happened after that?

The script changed. They took me seriously. They said “oooh! That’s great honey! Follow your dreams!”

^ I feel like I lived out a psychology experiment.

Say it confidently, say it enthusiastically, Say It proudly - and people pick up on that!

I mean someone who says something so confidently has to be successful in it don’t they?!?!

Yes. Yes, they do.

And until yesterday I forgot that even used to weigh on me… my how we grow. So, for the people going through that 🫶🏻 I feel you, but it’s time to FLIP THE SWITCH.

Murals transform the space EVERY. TIME.

Look, if sad beige walls are your *aesthetic* more power to you, but that’s not the kind of place I personally look for… or remember.

I remember the ones with personality.
That made the visit an experience.

if I can, YOU CAN… really.

I painted a mural for a billion dollar corporation, but honestly, they were just like every other business I work with

In that @loweshomeimprovement cares about what they do, and people’s experience when they walk in the door.
They have goals to grow their business, and the individuals who work for them.

I think before this job, I had the idea that because they’re corporate… they don’t care. They’re untouchable. But what I failed to realize, is that there are real people behind that business.

Like I said, I go into Lowe’s all of the time. No exaggeration. So I started talking to the people who work there. Made friends. Naturally the “corporate wall” fell down, and I just saw them as the normal people they are. Now maybe you already realize that. But for me that was new. I just hadn’t thought of Lowe’s like that, a business, a really successful big business, but a business still.

So really the how behind how I got the mural was normal. The whole experience… was normal.

Also, a lot of fun because there are so many truly good people that work there and love their job. (I would know- the mural is right at the entrance of the break room so I saw everybody all day long haha).

It all started with building a friendship.
Caring about people.
Something we can all do…
like I said if I can, you can.

And created a design that embodied all of them.

Each employee is represented. Showing their care for all people who work and give them their time. Including a red head, for Miss. Hannah, who prepped all of the walls before I came to paint!! (That was part of her deal hahah)

And the towns Uptown outline -community

3 years into this thing, and paint never fails to bring a blank space to life.

To start, no I do not normally make a habit of standing on my paint cans, but I am almost always smiling that big.

Now, below the surface:

•I’ve lived in the same house for 25years

•the only thing my mom remembers me saying when I was little is “I do it myself” - still accurate

•I eat 2 bananas a day (minimum)

•I’m self taught

•graduated from NCSU with a degree in Nutrition - never used it

•I love people. All kinds. Listening to stories. Asking questions. Really getting to know you

•I, quite literally, can paint for hours.
- give me a pack of orbit sweet mint bubble gum and a good business podcast and then I’m down right unstoppable.

•last week my sister made me detox my armpits

•black coffee. 2 ice cubes - because I’m a BABY when it comes to the thought of burning my mouth.

•my favorite part (although I’ve got a lot of favorite parts) about painting murals is when I get to know you. You have ideas about what you want, but not fully sure. Then I take that and create a design that hits the nail on the head. So satisfying. Every time.

I’m just me. I’m your girl. The one who lives her dream, works hard, and loves on all people around her - and encourages you to do the same…

Here we go, a new beginning ✨

I’ve been designing spaces since I was in middle school - literally, I still have the sketches of places I’d dreamed up.

*fast forward a couple of years*

And paint has become my way of designing those spaces. Taking your blank walls and turning them it into a statement. It’s my passion. It’s my love. It’s my baby.

And now I’m here to meet you - my favorite part.
